In our last newsletter we reported on Denmark’s plan to find a solution for the labeling of probiotics on food and food supplements together with the EU Commission and the Member States. In the meantime, The Netherlands are also struggling and allowing the use of the term “probiotics” on food and food supplements as mandatory information that characterizes the product. The underlying justification, which was published in a “Nutrition and Claims Handbook”, relates to an application for the use of the term “probiotics” as a generic descriptor that has not yet been conclusively assessed. According to the Dutch Food and Drug Administration, this is a claim on hold, which can be used until the EU Commission has come to a decision.
