The novel food application for heat-inactivated strain of Akkermania municipalia. got a positive opinion from EFSA. A. muciniphila is a gram-negative, strictly anaerobic, non-motile and non-spore-forming human gut bacterium that is supposed to be associated with metabolic health and cognition. Since the bacterium does not have a history of safe use in or as food, it was considered novel and required a pre-market authorization according to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283.

Following authorization by the EC, the ingredient can be used in food supplements and foods for special medical purposes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of a heat-inactivated gut bacterium without a history in food processing that might enter the food chain. If you would like to speak to our novel food experts, get in touch.
