Latest news on EFSA’s REFIT programme
The outcome of the Comminssion’s Regulatory Fitness and Performance (REFIT) program on botanicals and their nutrition profiles is expected to come out in late June. The outcome of this program will summarize the stake holders’ views. It seems that the positions were highly polarized between the different parties leading to the conclusion that no real solution is expected for botanical claims in the near future. More news will follow on this matter soon.
PepsiCo Nutrition Greenhouse Europe
PepsiCo has just announced the second year of its Nutrition Greenhouse incubator scheme in Europe, an initiative designed to discover and nurture breakthrough brands in the food and beverage sector.
This initiative started last year with 8 companies being selected (to learn more about last year’s companies: click here).
This program is open to nutrition entrepreneurs with market-ready health and wellness brands. The brand should have sales of €5 million or less and not be in direct or indirect competition with PepsiCo or any of its brands.
Up to ten emerging companies with products aimed at European consumers will be selected to receive a €20,000 grant plus the opportunity to work alongside PepsiCo’s leading brands experts during a six-month mentorship program. This initiative ends with one company being awarded a €100,000 prize to continue its expansion and further collaborations with PepsiCo also being explored.

OptiBiotix Health signs agreement with US-based Seed Health Well

OptiBiotix, a life science company developing products for high cholesterol, obesity and skin care, has entered into a commercial agreement with Seed Health Well to produce and market products containing a cholesterol-reducing LP-LDL® probiotic strain in the US. Seed Health has purchased LP-LDL® for use in its multi-strain product which is scheduled for launch in the USA before the end of this month.
IFF acquires Frutarom

International Flavors & Fragrances Inc. agreed to buy Israeli flavor maker Frutarom Industries Ltd. for $7.1 billion in what is set to be the largest deal yet in the rapidly-consolidating food flavoring industry. This acquisition will help IFF to gain new smaller health-conscious brands that have higher margins than those controlled by consumer companies such as Unilever.
Kaneka invests in AB-Biotics

Kaneka, an international Japanese chemical company has acquired a 34,8% share of AB-Biotics, a Spanish biotech company. At the same time, AB-Biotics has granted exclusivity to Kaneka for the production and sales of its probiotic products in US, Canada and Japan.
